Origin

Rocoto is native to Peru and dates to pre-Inca times. Archaeological evidence places its cultivation thousands of years in the past.

Its Quechua names include luqutu and rukutu, and it appears in the visual and domestic record of ancient Peruvian cultures.

It thrives in the eastern Andean cloud-forest belt. Oxapampa in Pasco is a renowned center, alongside Huánuco, Arequipa and Junín.
